What is Compression Therapy?

Compression therapy (also known as pressotherapy) uses controlled, rhythmic air pressure to gently compress the limbs. This supports:

  1. Improved circulation
  2. Lymphatic movement
  3. Reduction in muscular fatigue and heaviness
  4. Post-exercise recovery
  5. Relief from prolonged standing, walking or sitting

Compression therapy is commonly used by athletes, gym-goers and active individuals, but is equally suitable for those experiencing general leg, hip or arm fatigue from work or daily life.

FAQs

What is compression therapy (pressotherapy)?

Compression therapy, also known as pressotherapy, uses controlled, rhythmic air pressure to gently compress the limbs. Using professional-grade equipment such as Pulsio Pro boots and attachments, pressure is applied in sequences designed to support circulation and lymphatic movement. It is commonly used to aid recovery, reduce muscular fatigue and ease feelings of heaviness or stiffness.

What are the benefits of compression therapy?

Compression therapy may help to:

  1. Support blood circulation
  2. Encourage lymphatic drainage
  3. Reduce muscular fatigue and heaviness
  4. Ease post-exercise soreness
  5. Support recovery between training sessions
  6. Improve comfort after prolonged standing, walking or sitting

Many clients use compression therapy as part of a regular recovery routine alongside training or physically demanding work.

What areas can be treated with compression therapy?

Sessions can be tailored to treat:

  1. Legs (using Pulsio Pro compression boots)
  2. Hips and upper thighs (using hip attachments)
  3. Arms (using arm attachments)

Full body sessions treat the legs, hips and arms sequentially, as attachments are not used simultaneously.

Is compression therapy suitable for everyone?

Compression therapy is safe for many people, but there are certain contraindications.

You should not have compression therapy if you have:

  1. A known or suspected blood clot (DVT)
  2. Severe cardiovascular conditions
  3. Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  4. Acute infection or inflammation in the area being treated
  5. Severe peripheral vascular disease

If you are pregnant, have a medical condition, or are unsure whether compression therapy is suitable for you, this should be disclosed before your appointment.

Important:

After booking, you will be sent an informed consent and liability form which includes a full list of contraindications. This form must be completed in full before your session can begin. Compression therapy cannot be provided without a completed and signed form.

What should I wear to a compression (pressotherapy) session?

What should I wear to a compression (pressotherapy) session?

For hygiene and comfort, compression therapy is always performed over clean clothing. Clothing should be lightweight, fitted and breathable to allow the compression attachments to work effectively.

Recommended clothing:

  1. Leg compression: leggings, gym leggings or thin, fitted sports trousers
  2. Hip compression: leggings or fitted gym bottoms (avoid thick seams, zips or bulky pockets)
  3. Arm compression: long-sleeve top or lightweight base layer

Very thick, padded or loose clothing (including heavy tracksuit bottoms) is not recommended, as it can reduce the effectiveness of compression and may be uncomfortable.

What should I wear for combined massage and compression sessions?

For massage + compression services, you may need to bring:

  1. Sports shorts (for leg or hip massage)
  2. Appropriate clothing for the compression device (leggings, fitted gym bottoms or a long-sleeve top, depending on the area treated)

Massage clothing requirements are covered separately — please refer to the Sports Massage FAQs for guidance on appropriate clothing during a massage.

Is compression therapy suitable for different body sizes?

The Pulsio Pro compression boots and attachments used are designed to fit a wide range of adult body sizes and use adjustable, multi-chamber pressure to deliver effective compression for most people. Pressure levels are fully adjustable to ensure comfort and suitability.

For clients who are particularly petite or have shorter limb proportions, fit may vary. If you’re unsure whether compression therapy will be suitable for you, please feel free to get in touch before booking and we’ll be happy to advise.

Are food or drinks provided during compression therapy sessions?

Food and drinks are not provided during sessions. As compression therapy involves sitting or lying comfortably for an extended period, clients are encouraged to bring their own drink to stay hydrated throughout the session.

Can I use my phone or headphones during a compression therapy session?

Yes. For leg and hip compression, you’re welcome to use your phone if you wish, and for all compression sessions, you’re welcome to use headphones.

For arm compression therapy, it isn’t possible to bend your elbows while the attachments are in use, so using a phone during this part of the session isn’t practical. However, there is a TV in the treatment room with relaxing background spa music if you’d prefer to fully switch off and enjoy a more restful experience.

Will the pressure be adjusted to me?

Yes. All sessions are therapist-led, and pressure levels are adjusted based on your comfort, experience and the area being treated. You are encouraged to give feedback during the session.

Once you are familiar with the controls and device settings, you are welcome to adjust the unit yourself if you prefer, with the therapist available nearby at all times for guidance, support or any queries.

How often can I have compression therapy?

This depends on your training, workload and recovery needs. Some clients book compression therapy occasionally for general recovery, while others use it more regularly during periods of higher training volume or physical demand. This can be discussed during your session.

Is compression therapy painful?

Compression therapy should not be painful. The sensation is usually described as firm, rhythmic pressure. Pressure can be adjusted at any point to ensure the session remains comfortable.

What can I expect at my first compression therapy session?

Your first session will begin with a brief introduction and a review of your completed informed consent and liability form, including any relevant medical considerations. This ensures the session is appropriate, safe and comfortable for you.

You’ll then be guided through the use of the Pulsio Pro compression boots or attachments and helped to get set up in a private treatment room. Pressure settings are adjusted to your comfort, and you’ll be encouraged to give feedback throughout the session.

The therapist will remain available nearby at all times, and once you are familiar with the controls, you are welcome to adjust the settings yourself if you prefer. After the session, simple aftercare guidance will be provided.
